Metal Detecting Find Sites
Where To Find The Best Metal Detecting Finds
Even though you can use your Metal Detector to look in a lot of different areas, you'll really want to feel the excitement of unearthing ancient relics with your newfound hobby and your state of the art devices. You'll be so thrilled when you see coins that are one, maybe even two or three centuries old.
Research is the key to getting the sites that have more history to them. How can you research?
1) Old Maps - Check out local city halls and libraries for these maps; they'll give you insight as to abandoned or ancient buildings and rail lines that people may not have scoured in a long time.
2) Old Newspapers - these will give you insight into events where you might learn about places where people would have left or lost something, especially if those places no longer exist as functioning parts of the town.
3) Old Property Tax Records - these will reveal abandoned bars, bus stops, service stations, and homes, and much more. You can find plenty of coins in these places.
4) School Records - these will be great places to search for coins. You can even look along all the regular paths that were used to go there by schoolchildren. Learn the exact locations of these old buildings. Even check out the playground areas and lunch areas for these coins.
5) Local Historical Societies - they will have plenty of data regarding the history of your town, as well as abandoned places you can find treasure. You really shouldn't ignore what they have to contribute.
6) Local Museums - they'll show places that are important to your town's history, and have plenty of resources as well. Just talk with a few employees and historians who work at the museum, and heed their words and information carefully.
7) Senior Citizens - they'll have a better idea of what happened in the distant past. Talk to senior citizens at events and homes for these people. They will be repositories of knowledge and history, so listen to what they have to say.
8) Old Police Reports - you'll be able to track down treasure-laden events in the past. For example, if there's a robbery near a lake front home, their booty might have been thrown into the river in lieu of getting caught. You could even look into abandoned areas where police calls were made.
9) Old Fire Department Records - you could look at buildings that burned down. If the lot is still there and abandoned, you might be able to find something. There are also public events that involve the Fire Department, like parades and the like. Find the locations and starting/end points of the parades. Where did they hold picnics?
10) Churches - You'll be able to find plenty of loot in early churches of your town. There are plenty of them that are now businesses or have been demolished. There are also occasions when churchgoers would picnic outside, possibly leaving coins and such.
11) Colleges - These are constantly expanding places, full of history. Check the areas in the vicinity of outside areas like picnic spots and sports arenas. You'll also get plenty of data regarding the place they are found, as they'll have info on the history of the town. The college library can help you out.
12) Library - This is the greatest resource you can have. The local library will be your best source for information. The librarian will be able to help tell you more about the town you're searching in. In a library, you'll find all of the maps, records, and books that detail the history of the town or city, no matter where you're searching, so be sure to go there first to search out possible hunting spots. That library card will really come in handy!
