Whites Prizm IV Metal Detector
Mastering The Sensitivity of Whites Prizm IV
White's Prizm IV is extremely sensitive. In field testing I've noticed if an object is hitting at the halfway mark, it is usually iron. If you get a wavering signal, you are too close to the item. Simply raise the detector up and go back over the spot slowly. I believe that going slowly when you get a signal is essential to the effectiveness of this metal detector.
Tips for Using White's Prizm IV
Block out nails, and utilize the tone identification only. You will not need a pinpointer because this model performs pinpointing in an excellent manner.
With this device, I have discovered tiny bullet parts from the Civil War and even parts of musket balls. Some other items I have found are buttons, little buckles, a lock from the 1850s, a liberty quarter dated 1926, and a class ring dated 1944.
Depth, Pinpointing and Accuracy
This model's accuracy of object identification, depth, and pinpointing is superior. If the detector lets you know that there is a quarter buried 5" deep, and you utilize the pinpointer mode, a quarter will be 5" deep right in the middle of the coil. The 3-tone object identification setting is great, and I use it often.
There is a notch setting too, which seems to work, but I do not personally use it. Some of my other detectors appear to have more sensitivity to tinier metal items that are buried deeper than what the Prizm IV can detect; however their accuracy is somewhat questionable. When using the Prizm IV, I was able to locate a button 9" deep, which is great.
The detector is extremely quiet, and thanks to its lightness, you can hunt for hours. You can even see the LCD display in full sun when wearing sunglasses.
Cons of the Prizm IV
Unfortunately, the machine has given a few "ghost signals". You begin hunting for the object, find nothing, and when you sweep the device over the spot again there's no signal. Frustrating!
The Prizm IV does not have many accessories. I would prefer another, smaller coil to hunt in places with a lot of junk instead of having to use an 8" or 950 coil.
All in all, I would suggest going with the Prizm II or the Garrett Ace 250 instead.
