Whites Prizm III Metal Detector
Don't Buy The Overpriced Whites Prizm III
The Prizm III is very expensive, and it is not a very good detector. In fact, if I were associated with White's, I would be ashamed. It is probably worth around $149.00, but it is definitely not worth the $299.99 I got conned into paying for it by an energetic representative. PT Barnum once stated that a sucker is born every 60 seconds, and in this case, it was me. However, I was depending on the fact that it was made by White's since I have never been disappointed by them before.
To begin with, the identification capability for coins is awful. It jumps around, you can't trust it, and it's just poor. Another problem I have with this model is its pinpointing. As you pinpoint, the volume does not increase when you hit a target. The pinpointing is so bad that you might begin to think that the objects are mobile or that they are able to disappear entirely. Depth analysis and object identification are not even close to accurate. In addition, you will hear a tone, sweep back over the object and hear only silence. Then, when you pass over the space again a bunch more times, you could possibly hear a second tone. How are you supposed to know when to dig?
The entire diameter of the coil will lead to a solid tone, so you have to dig out holes that equal that diameter to locate the object. A 2-way repeating tone is supposed to indicate a decent object on this model. This almost never happens. Hunting is extremely challenging with the drawbacks of this device, such as the poor coin identification, the erratic tones even when you've hit a decent object, and lack of a tone identification (that you usually only see on the cheaper models made by other brands that cost the same as the Prism III). You will end up digging for a bunch of worthless items because you don't want to miss an object that has value.
I cannot believe that White's has manufactured a device that is so terrible. Even the headphone jack is in a bad position because the wire crosses the screen so you can't see what's happening during your hunt. I do not think White's intended for any object to be located by this detector. I do not write a lot of reviews; however I have many years of experience under my belt so I am trying to help other hunters avoid disappointment by telling them not to buy this worthless detector.
For those of you who are just starting out, the Prizm III will make sure you never progress. You will become disheartened and probably put the device away forever.
