Whites Prizm II Metal Detector
A Review of Whites Prizm II
Assembling White's Prizm II is very straightforward and simple. The directions are presented in a clear and simple format. However, the directions do not seem to cover where the headphone jack is located.
Luckily, the location is actually very easy to find, as it located on the side of the box itself, covered by a black snap covering to prevent anything from getting into the jack.
This unit is designed for balance, something many individuals are looking for at the end of the day. The weight is well distributed, neither top nor bottom heavy, and the arm cup is actually comfortable to us.
Prizm II - Portable and Easy to Use
The Prizm II is a portable, easy to use detector. I recommend using factory settings for proper discrimination, as the presets help eliminate iron and foil false detections. Within 30 minutes, I found $0.56, including 2 quarters at about 5 inches.
Although the model may lack a depth indicator, it's not a necessary tool for beginners. Plus, it translates into a cost savings of $100, which you can instead use to purchase metal detecting guides, books, or even a newer model -- such as the Prizm III -- if metal detecting becomes a lifelong hobby.
Field Test - and Finds - With White's Prizm II
During my second day at a man-made beach, I found 13 coins, fishing sinkers, 2 hot wheel cars, an old key, and more than 30 pull tabs. Still, I dug at all indication locations. The Prizm II detects items through sweeping movements, unless the user selects the pinpoint present selection.
Once it detects a metallic object, the unit will emit a clear beep. In order to verify that it is not a fluke, swing the unit in forward and backward directions to make sure the signal remains constant. This technique work very well, and I can attest to it.
Depth of the Prizm II
Through my use, it appears the Prizm II will detect signals up to 6 to 8 inches in depth, though most of my finds were at far less depths. The Pinpoint preset is an excellent tool, and is very easy to use, working from the center of the coil.
In order to fully understand how discrimination actually works, read guides and books on the subject, as this can help users adjust settings to their preferences. Adjusting the discrimination settings -- and sensitivity -- is very easy and user friendly.
Digital Display
The digital display is a nice addition as it will show an image of the object. During my initial test, I did not know that rings actually could be detected and will show up in the tab range, but ultimately it did not matter as I responded to all signals.
Unfortunately, I was only able to use the Prizm II for two days as a major snow storm moved into the area and covered the ground with 17 inches of snow, preventing me from using the unit any further.
White's Prizm II is a solid choice for beginners
Nevertheless, I am very pleased with this particular unit. I definitely recommend White's Prizm II to anyone interested in metal detecting, especially as it can be found between $150 and 200.
