Tesoro Silver uMax Metal Detector
The Tesoro Silver uMax Is An Inexpensive, High Quality Detector
Don't be fooled by the Tesoro Silver uMax's low price and lack of elaborate bells and whistles. I've had experience hunting with guys utilizing the big, expensive machines (White's DFX, Minelab SE) and not only did I have as many great finds as they did, a lot of the time mine were BETTER.
Silver uMax - Lightweight and Great for Beginners
Needless to say, they were truly astounded. You'll love how lightweight the Silver Umax is, and find you'll be able to swing it all day without getting tired. It's quite easy to learn to use, and is basically a "turn it on and go" machine. It also provides you with a fast learning curve, and you'll find yourself quickly being able to recognize a good signal from junk.
Stock Coils and Upgrades
Even though the stock coil it comes with works great, I chose to upgrade my coil to a 9 x 8 concentric coil to achieve more depth. I find I'm able to dig targets consistently in a 10 inch depth range (soft soil).
When I purchased my machine it was used and just $150, but I've had NO PROBLEMS with it at all. You should also be able to find new ones for around $240 on e-Bay. I have to say this machine is so underrated it's not even funny, plus the fact Tesoro's have a lifetime warranty as well.
Tesoro uMax Discrimination
If you have been use to a VDI, you may find the uMax takes a bit of getting use to, but once you do you'll find it's a totally awesome unit. Since I'm into coin hunting I can tell you the discrimination works really well, and I usually set the DISC in between pennies and tabs for great results.
I find by using the stock coil I pull more coins than garbage; my first find turned out to be a quarter with an old nail laying across it and still pulled a really good signal. Another one of my finds was a quarter that had 2 pennies about an inch apart, and I almost ignored the signal because I figured it was too big, but I'm still learning as well so I dug it up and was surprised by my find.
Sensitivity
You'll find that placing a sensitivity setting at 10 or Max boost you are able to go deep, but be prepared for the detector to chatter. I've found in my tesoro directions (the owner's manual)the best way to handle a detector that chatters at a high sensitivity setting (i.e. 10 or max boost)is to lower your sensitivity setting to 6 or 7 inches, so you are getting coins nearer the surface and less detector "chatter".
I've even had this verified by Tesoro technicians I've talked to on the phone. In addition, when you've lowered that sensitivity setting closer to "7" you'll also be getting a bunch more coins .Without a doubt, the Silver uMax is my favorite Tesoro metal detector.
