Minelab X-Terra 50 Metal Detector
A Review of The Minelab X-Terra 50
A higher end model of the X-Terra 30, the X-Terra 50 is another quality Minelab metal detector, thanks in large part to its strong ID function. If the ID function of the device cannot determine effectively what it is seeing it will consistently come up with new numbers as it passes over the area. This is usually a good sign that the item is worthless.
The accept/reject feature for items is a great inclusion. This feature allows you to set the metal detector to ignore a specific metal type by passing it over the metal and pressing the appropriate button. You can tell it to ignore the given metal, but if you change your mind you are able to reactivate it.
X-Terra's Four Tones
The X-50 comes with four different tone volumes for identification of possible targets, with louder sounds meaning stronger signals.
In my experience with the device, the depth display on it seems very accurate. The device allowed me to find a silver button in the woodlands that was buried 10". In all honesty, if something was deeper than that it might not even be worth it to try and dig it out. The device seemed to work great over wet sand as well, as I was able to find items buried 12".
Most of my experience with searching around for buried coins has taken place on lawns, so I didn't really want to dig deep if I found something -- it was a hot and dry summer day -- so I was usually getting 16 out of 20, but at others it would hold at 20. It would be best to be able to set the device and not have to finagle it constantly.
X-Terra's 10.5 Coil
Some of the best luck I have come across has been with the 10.5. DD coil, however you may want to keep in mind that the 5x10 DD high frequency is very highly attuned to small objects and nickel which means I have found many pennies. with this setting.
I have seen this Minelab detector work side by side with many other models, and though there is sometimes talk of digging 10 to 12 inches for a coin, the guys with more expensive machines still seem to be digging similar holes to me and finding the same trash as I often do.
Conclusion on the Minelab X-Terra 50
Before deciding what metal detector you should purchase, be sure to do a lot of background research. While many believe Whites M6 to be even better than the X-50; however, the Minelab X-50 detector won me over due to its great features.
