Minelab E-TRAC - One of Wayne's Favorites - In The Field
I remember that it was the week before Christmas, and I headed off to the park with my new E-TRAC to search for treasures in the thawed ground. The park I went to still has some goodies to find, but not much of a very high value. I chose to use the Etrac without a disc, just a wide open screen. I screen and I was trying to recreate the screen.
I hunted for an hour and found one group of nice, rusty nails firmly attached to one clad coin. The temperature was only been 38 degrees, and I can not say I was really enjoying the hunt. I had given up and gone back to the car to head home when the advice of the dealer and a good friend popped into my mind.
They both said to use the factory coin program and then change the setting to disc out the bulk of the silver of black in the top right corner of the screen. I made this change, and then also changed to a manual sens of 21. I then went back into the park where I have found previously found rare coins, even an amazing 1885 V nickle.
It took me less than 5 minutes to pick up a deep signal that went in one set direction very persistently. My curiosity (and excitement) were peaked so I started digging. At six inches down I found a great rusty nail. But when I rescanned the hole, I still picked up a 12-44 number. I kept digging and when I hit 8 inches I found a great silver dime.
I continued digging and found 6 wheats that were all pretty torn up. It was getting really cold by now, but I figured I'd try out another park. This one sits at the bottom of a long hill that tumbles out onto a flat, open picnic area. As I walked along the bottom of this hill I began finding older coins right away.
I started with a cool mercury dime and then found 5 more wheats. The impressive thing is that I had already searched this spot many times over with other Explorers and other brands of metal detectors. Even a fresh newcomer to this hobby could have found these coins by simply using the Etrac. The biggest challenge for newcomers to this particular activity is learning how to pinpoint with the dd coil and how to creep the coil. However, once you can do this, you can find coins hidden deep by using only the factory modes with very little programming required.
