Garrett GTAx 400 Metal Detector
The Garrett GTAx 400 - A Solid Choice for Beginners
The GTAx 400 has a high level of sensitivity, yet it's also durable and light to carry. Putting the metal detector together is not difficult and does not require any tools. After you assemble it, you can begin to detect for hidden treasures.
Features of the GTAx 400
This detector is equipped with a pad that encircles the upper part of your arm which stabilizes the coil located at the end of the detector. The control panel is positioned right above the padded grip, with a touchpad that controls the detector's discrimination pattern, sensitivity, and threshold. The device requires 8 9-volt batteries (the initial set comes with it) and includes a 24-month warranty from the manufacturer.
Comparisons to Similar Detectors
I compared this model with my reliable Minelab GT Sovreign that is equipped with a sunray 12" coil. The GTAx 400 is very comparable, hitting on the same objects as the GT. In fact, I used the GTAx 400 in my yard to locate a bit of lead buried 8 inches deep without any problem.
Then, I placed a $2 coin 8 inches deep, which is at the limit of the detector. However, even though my GT found it a bit higher, the GTAx was able to detect it with its 8-inch coil.
This device is a basic detector that does not require any preparation. Its discrimination is extremely effective. I am not a fan of the audio on this device since it is only there to detect something that does not register on the LCD. Since the detector is not very expensive, it is worth the price.
I will probably stick with my Minelab since I like its variable audio option, and I can turn off iron detection as well. The GTA 400 does not allow iron to be canceled.
Conclusion
For someone just starting out in detecting, this model is an excellent starter, since it is user-friendly and its identification is accurate. Excellent unit that is affordable. I would highly recommend this detector since it is reasonably priced.
