Wayne's Personal Thoughts on the Garrett Ace 250
I purchased the Garrett Ace 250 as a set that came with headphones, a pinpointer (which is awesome), 2 coils, a cover, and a bag. Now that I have detected with the Garrett Ace 250 a number of times, I really like it a lot. The instruction guide suggests you use it for about 100 hours in order to understand the detector, but in my opinion, it will only take about 50 (this may depend on experience levels, though).
Settings
This model adjusts to a variety of settings quickly. On occasion, the indicator will get a bit jumpy on the icon; but all you need to do is sweep and listen for a beep. If you hear a double beep, start digging! I found that the beep will be of a different pitch based on what it has found.
Sensitivity
This model has a high level of sensitivity and I was given a few small beeps that I followed up with the pinpointer. Even though I had the smaller coil on the detector, it was still able to make deep hits. I did find a couple of drawbacks which includes the stem wobbling a bit, and since there is no way to turn the beeps up or down, you have to use headphones.
The machine itself is of superior quality. This device is an excellent value, and in my opinion, it's a great device for any level of ability, even if you are simply going to have it as your backup.
Compared to other Garrett detectors -- such as the Ace 100 and Ace 150 -- the 250 is head and shoulders above them in all aspects.
Batteries
The detector runs on 4 AA batteries that run for a long time. I have not used this device on an older area that has a lot of buried iron, so I can't say how it would work in that situation. But, even so, I truly believe that this detector can hold its own when compared to more expensive models.
It does not weigh a lot and is in balance, so you can use it for a long time without getting tired. Some people have said they do not like the pinpointing feature which includes a graph and button. However, if you aren't able to pinpoint with this device, the reason is that you have not taken the time to learn how to do it correctly.
Overall, this device is awesome for the amount of money. I have seen people with some very expensive detectors who are using this model as well, which means it does what it's supposed to do.
One more last tip, if you buy a Garrett Ace 250 be sure the read and watch owners's manual and videos. They give you a lot of tips and can help you get started faster.
