Garrett Ace 100 Metal Detector
A Review of the Garrett Ace 100 Metal Detector
The Garrett Ace 100 is a terrific instrument for those just getting a foothold in the world of metal detecting. If you really want to get a lot of metal detecting finds, dial up the discriminator to the top of the coins section. Determine where to begin digging and what to bother digging up, by the beeping of the detector. Limit your digs to those items which set off the detector when the coil is swiped in either direction.
Discriminator
You will still miss out on items, but otherwise you waste time digging up nothing but junk with the Garrett Ace 100. Regardless of where I set the discriminator, it always beeps when it passes over coke can tabs and beer can tabs. I've stopped trying to pinpoint as it's too difficult. I've opted to dig a 10 inch perimeter around where I believe the object is located. That's really the best I can do.
You can stop digging at roughly seven inches depth. I've gathered that is the maximum depth for an object the size of a coin. Of course, there are exceptions. I did dig up a hubcap and it was two feet down.
Battery Life
The batteries in the Garrett Ace 100 are long-lasting. You can go about thirty hours with them. So the Garrett Ace 100 does not power through batteries.
I've been into metal detecting for some time. I started with one model and sold it to upgrade to the next level in metal detectors. I've continued that pattern. So I've had nearly everything Bounty Hunter makes. This is not my first Garrett either. I've had most of them as well, including the Ace 150, Ace 250, GTI 1500, and GTI 2500. For the money, the Garrett Ace 100 is a beauty. You will want it over a Bounty Hunter detector .
No Bounty Hunter is going to get you a depth of seven to eight inches. And the discrimination on a Garrett Ace 100 is tremendous. For $150, you really can't ask for much more in a metal detector. You really should take the time to browse the owner's manual. Also, don't skip the air test. You want to complete this using different coins and alloys. This way you can fine tune your settings.
Conclusion
All of that being said, I would not buy a Garrett Ace 100. If I did, I would want to upgrade it immediately. But I did enjoy playing with it and testing it out. With the Garrett Ace 100, I did find a couple rings and a handful of silver coins. I even located a 1934 Tag der arbet badge. The oldest thing I've ever found was from the year 1907.
