Fisher ID Excel Metal Detector
Learn How To Use the Fisher ID Excel
This coin loving metal detector is a snap to use and very versatile to boot. Typically I leave the sensor on 7 to 8. With a surface that's heavy on the minerals though I tend to place it on 6 or even 5. I've found that changing it up like this has little impact on its ability to take deep readings.
ID Function
There's an excellent ID function so you'll be able to dig up only those really good finds. In fact, once you master its use (which can be done very quickly), you'll be able to avoid the junk and focus on the best items, with a pretty good idea of what you're going to find.
It also pinpoints with great precision. Most hits that are identified by the detector will be in your hand in 15 to 20 seconds, though some targets take longer if they're better concealed. That's pretty amazing, since I've personally seen people search an area for ten minutes and still walk away empty handed.
I'd read the reviews that discussed its narrow depth functions. I find that the depth is just fine, especially for coins. With the 8 inch setting, I was able to locate plenty of thin copper and silver coins from the 17th and 18th centuries.
I've been out with other searchers who were using a more well-known brand (same price, though) or a similar detector by a different company, and not one found more than I did. ;-)
People tend to underestimate how well this detector can perform and are always surprised at how good your results are; then they become really interested in learning all about it.
Conclusion About Fisher's ID Excel
In just 2 years of working with my Excel, I've located over 300 coins and quite a few pieces of jewelry. I've tried those heavier detectors, but they'll wear you out way too quickly, unlike the Excel, which is so light you can keep swinging for hours.
This machine discriminates very well and the ground balancing is extremely easy to use; the only big downside is the batteries - they last well enough but can be difficult to remove when it's time to replace them. I find the pinpoint and depth suits me quite well, but it really just comes down to learning how to work the detector. I don't like the plastic housing or the decals, which look tacky, and I would prefer it if the unit had optional coils.
While not my favorite Fisher metal detector, it's a decent value with a steeper learning curve.
