Fisher CZ 20 Metal Detector
The Fisher CZ 20 Is A Great Underwater Metal Detector
I have been using the CZ-20 metal detector for the last 3 years while scuba diving in the Baltic Sea, it features a VLF dual frequency and a small 8 inch coil. I have made several discoveries while using this very excellent piece of equipment. It has a deep reach for searching while underwater and the CZ is also very sturdy. I have not made use of it above water, but I believe you would find it rather heavy on land.
Pros of the Fisher CZ 20:
It is a lightweight - for an underwater metal detector - featuring a sturdy shaft and a small but powerful search coil, which are all excellent for use underwater. It is easily manipulated and the knobs are very workable even when it is very cold and you are wearing gloves. The wires are also sturdy and the headphones clean up well and also hold up well.
The CZ is incredibly accurate when searching. The box that holds that battery is separate from the apparatus itself, so if any water gets inside the detector, the battery box will not be damaged. It is sand and mud resistant, so it can be used in lakes or on the open sea.
It also features a 3 tone identifier and it identifies with precision. The CZ-20 is equipped with red glow lamps that allow you to easily see any object it detects. It is easy to obtain spare parts from another model, the Fisher Z 1280. The updraft is small in size. It can be used in water that is 76 meters deep and it is also effective under 124 PSI of water pressure.
Cons of the Fisher CZ 20:
The CZ-20 require 4 9 volt batteries which are often pricey. The pinpoint button is prone to breakage with overuse. You could instead use the Autotune mode on this model as it will serve the same purpose. I experienced some trouble with red algae in the western Baltic Sea, it affected the CZ-20 about once a year.
Because this algae has a lot of iron in it, it made the CZ-20's detection a little unpredictable. If you are searching in a seabed that has a high level of minerals, it may not work so well.
Conclusion:
This machine worked well and I would definitely choose to purchase it again. When compared with Minelab's and Tesero's, the CZ-20 performed well and had a sturdy shaft. It is effective and easily handled, a real "turn and go" machine.
Once you get used to using it, you will be able to detect metal in a much shorter period of time. However, Fisher stopped producing the CZ-20, which is confusing to me. It is a much better performer than their 1280.
