Fisher 1212X Metal Detector
A Personal Review Of The Fisher 1212X
I've never been one to invest in complicated metal detectors, as more controls usually just mean more work for me. I end up spending all my time messing around with the metal detector rather than actually searching for coins. So my super complex machine ends up staying at home, where I can play around with the controls and perform air tests!
Simple, Dependable Detector
If you'd rather have a simpler machine as well, then I suggest you try the Fisher 1212X. This detector is incredibly light, only 2.9 lbs, and it runs on one 9-volt battery (I'd go with the alkaline battery, you'll get 25 - 30 hours of use).
There's a very smooth response to the target and you'll be able to do a nice, slow sweep. My only real issue is with its pinpointing. You'll need to practice with it before you can use it with any precision.
Still, this is the easiest one I've ever owned. Best of all, there's only one knob to worry about. I picked it up originally so I wouldn't have to use my more expensive model in the rocks, plants and usual muck.
This detector has more than held its own, and I have a few thousand coins, including Indians, seated and silver, to prove it (more metal detecting finds here). This one may not search as deeply or have the differential ability of some other models, but as a basic detector, it's hard to beat.
I found it on e-bay, as a gift for my eldest son. He kept talking about taking this up as a hobby. This turned out to be the best way to start!
Conclusion About the Fisher 1212x
It weighs almost nothing, won't use up a 9 volt battery and really works great!
All you have is the one knob. It has a decent depth and it can find anything! It will even work over both wet and dry grass. The discrimination is good too - you'll pick up brass, copper, tin, bronze, silver, gold, just to name a few. Both me and my son were able to use it comfortably, and I'm 6'2" and he's closer to 5'.
Fisher likes to use the phrase double derivative electronics, but I just say nice and simple. Even with the shipping costs, I was able to buy this one on e-bay for less than $100.00.
